The Spark: A V-8 Hybrid Powertrain in the Works
The initial spark for this rumor originated from a brief comment made by Takashi Uehara, Toyota’s president of powertrains, at the recent Japan Mobility Show. He suggested that Toyota’s new twin-turbo V-8 hybrid powertrain, slated for the upcoming GR GT supercar and Lexus successor to the LFA, could potentially fit within the engine bay of the 300-Series Land Cruiser. While the 300-Series Land Cruiser is not sold in the United States, the Tundra shares a crucial connection: both vehicles utilize the same body-on-frame TNGA-F platform and many shared components. This realization led many to believe that the powertrain could also find its way into a high-performance Tundra variant.
