Volkswagen is preparing a more powerful version of its popular T-Roc crossover, slated for release in 2027. The next-generation T-Roc R will inherit key performance components from the latest Golf R, including a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine producing 328 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. However, the new model will adopt a mild-hybrid system to meet upcoming Euro 7 emissions regulations.
Key Performance Upgrades
Early prototypes reveal several performance-focused upgrades, including a distinctive quad-exhaust system from Akrapovič and larger, 20-inch forged wheels with wider tires for improved grip. The vehicle also sports more aggressive bumpers and upgraded brakes. Despite the mild-hybrid integration, power output is expected to remain consistent with the current Golf R, prioritizing efficiency over outright horsepower gains.
Mild-Hybrid System and Future Compliance
The shift to a 48-volt mild-hybrid setup reflects Volkswagen’s commitment to meeting stricter emission standards. While a temporary power boost is typical for such systems, VW engineers are primarily focused on reducing fuel consumption and emissions. Transmission and All-Wheel Drive
The T-Roc R will continue to utilize a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and 4Motion all-wheel drive, mirroring the Golf R. The manual gearbox option will not return.
Market Availability
The T-Roc R will not be available in the United States, and the production of the Touareg R, a more luxurious SUV from the R division, will end in 2026. Volkswagen has also previewed plans for a fully electric R model in the future, including a combustion-free Polo GTI.
