Ford is upgrading its popular Puma electric SUV for the 2026 model year, increasing its official range to exceed 250 miles. This improvement brings the Puma closer to competing models like the Peugeot e-2008 and Mini Aceman, both of which offer similar ranges from comparable battery packs.

Enhanced Efficiency, Not Bigger Battery

The range increase isn’t achieved through a larger battery. Instead, Ford has focused on improving the efficiency of the existing 43 kWh (usable) battery pack. Specific details on the modifications remain undisclosed, but the result is a noticeable jump from the 2025 model’s maximum range of 233 miles. This approach is more cost-effective than increasing battery size, which would add weight and expense.

Faster Charging Remains Consistent

Despite the range improvement, the Puma retains its peak charging speed of 100 kW. This allows for a rapid 10-80% charge in approximately 23 minutes, making it convenient for long journeys.

Advanced Driver Assistance Features Added

The 2026 Puma will also introduce BlueCruise, Ford’s semi-autonomous driving system, previously exclusive to the Mustang Mach-E. This feature enhances driver convenience and safety, particularly on highways. However, BlueCruise will be an optional extra, requiring the Driver Assistance Pack and a subscription to activate.

Pricing and Availability

Orders for the 2026 Puma are open now, with deliveries scheduled to begin in May. The base price starts at £26,245, including the UK’s £3,750 Electric Car Grant (ECG) discount. The quick sell-out of the 2025 model was partly due to its eligibility for this grant, making it a financially attractive option for buyers.

Market Dominance Continues

The Ford Puma, in both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric versions, is currently the best-selling car in the UK for 2025, with over 46,000 units sold to date. This range boost is likely to reinforce its position in the competitive EV market.

The focus on efficiency improvements rather than simply increasing battery size highlights a pragmatic approach to EV development. By retaining fast charging speeds and adding advanced driver assistance features, Ford aims to maintain the Puma’s appeal to a broad range of buyers
