Leapmotor Expands into South America with Stellantis Backing

Leapmotor, the rapidly growing Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has officially launched operations in Brazil and Chile this month, marking a significant step in its global expansion. The move is heavily supported by its strategic partnership with automotive giant Stellantis, leveraging the latter’s established infrastructure and dealer network in the region.

South American Market Entry

Leapmotor intends to offer its complete range of electric vehicles – including Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) and Extended-Range Electric Vehicles (EREVs) – across South America, beginning with Brazil. This expansion isn’t a solo effort; Stellantis provides critical after-sales service and dealership access, ensuring South American consumers have access to integrated electric mobility solutions. The company is currently selling the C10 (pure electric and extended-range versions) and the B10 (pure electric mid-size SUV) in both countries, and recently debuted the six-seater C16 at the São Paulo Auto Show.

Rapid Expansion Plans

By 2025, Leapmotor plans to establish a robust presence with 36 sales and service outlets across 27 Brazilian cities and five in Chile. This aggressive rollout relies heavily on Stellantis’s existing channel resources, which is critical for providing a comprehensive customer experience. Beyond vehicle sales, Leapmotor is also introducing its LEAP+ connected platform, offering features like digital keys, remote vehicle control, and integrated charging navigation. Partnerships with local charging providers – such as Zletric and GreenV – will also offer customers access to charging solutions and home charger installations.

Global Growth and Challenges

Leapmotor’s international footprint has expanded quickly since its European market entry last year. Through its joint venture with Stellantis, Leapmotor International, it now operates in over 30 markets across Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and Africa as of June 2023. The company has set an ambitious sales target of 1 million units by 2026, with 900,000 units expected from China and 100,000 from overseas markets.

Data shows Leapmotor exported over 44,000 vehicles between January and October this year, making it the leading exporter among new Chinese EV brands. The company holds a strong position in key European markets like Germany, France, Italy, and Spain. However, reaching the 2026 target will require substantial growth beyond its current concentrated overseas markets. Leapmotor must diversify its sales to meet its ambitious goals.

Leapmotor’s expansion into South America underscores a growing trend of Chinese EV manufacturers seeking international markets. The partnership with Stellantis is a key factor in accelerating this process, providing a vital bridge for navigating foreign regulations and consumer preferences. This could reshape the EV landscape, challenging established automakers in emerging economies.
