Renault 4×4 Prototype: Production Inches Closer

Renault is nearing the final stages of development for a four-wheel-drive version of its retro-inspired 4 model. A working prototype, based on the previously revealed 4 Savane 4×4 concept, has been tested and is reportedly close to production readiness.

Engineering the All-Terrain 4

The prototype, tested on the beaches of Denmark, features a second, smaller electric motor powering the rear axle – distinct from the 118hp or 148hp front-wheel-drive options currently available. These modifications include a 20mm track width increase, a 15mm lift in ground clearance, and wider 215mm tires.

Subtle visual cues differentiate the 4×4 Savane from standard models: a modest body kit and interior accents with brown trim. The infotainment system displays real-time torque distribution between axles, with a dedicated “terrain mode” selector for off-road use.

First Drive Impressions

Initial tests on firm Danish sands were not especially demanding, but the prototype proved capable when driven over more challenging, rutted sections. The car feels factory-ready and production-viable.

Why this matters: The 4×4 version expands the 4’s appeal beyond its retro charm to include practical off-road utility. This move capitalizes on the growing demand for small, all-terrain EVs – a niche currently underserved by major manufacturers. The vehicle could attract a new customer base, blending nostalgia with modern capability.

Renault has not yet specified final production details, but the prototype suggests a near-ready vehicle poised to enter showrooms soon.

With its blend of classic design and all-wheel-drive capability, the 4×4 Renault 4 is likely to carve out a unique position in the rapidly evolving EV market.
