Xpeng X9 EV Update: Extended Range, Enhanced AI Capabilities

5

Xpeng is preparing to launch an updated version of its all-electric X9 MPV, boasting a maximum range of 750 kilometers (466 miles) and a significant boost in artificial intelligence processing power. The new model builds on the X9’s recent success, where it led sales in both high-end battery electric vehicle (BEV) and extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) MPV categories in China in November.

Performance and Range Improvements

The updated X9 will be offered in both front-wheel drive (FWD) and all-wheel drive (AWD) configurations. The FWD version retains its 235 kW (315 hp) motor, while the AWD adds a 135 kW (181 hp) rear motor, bringing total output to 370 kW (496 hp). Both models will utilize a 110 kWh ternary lithium battery from CALB-Tech, enabling the extended ranges.

  • The FWD model is rated for 710 km (441 miles).
  • The AWD variant achieves 750 km (466 miles).

These figures represent an increase over the current X9’s 650 km and 740/702 km ranges, respectively, demonstrating a clear focus on maximizing battery efficiency and capacity. The curb weight for the FWD and AWD versions will be 2,740 kg and 2,685 kg, respectively.

Triple AI Chip Integration

A defining feature of the updated X9 is its integration of three Turing AI chips, delivering a combined 2,250 TOPS (trillions of operations per second) of computing power. Two chips will run Xpeng’s VLA model for advanced driver assistance, while the third powers the VLM AI model for the in-cabin experience.

This integration positions the X9 as a leading “AI vehicle,” capable of handling complex autonomous functions and delivering a highly intelligent cockpit experience.

Design and Dimensions

The external design remains largely consistent with the existing X9, though minor adjustments have been made to the front and rear bumpers to align with the EREV variant. The vehicle’s length has increased by 23 mm to 5316 mm (209.3 inches), while width (1988 mm), height (1785 mm), and wheelbase (3160 mm) remain unchanged.

Market Performance and Expansion

Xpeng delivered 3,234 X9s in November, a 161% increase over the previous month. The EREV variant drove much of this growth, with over 2,000 units sold within ten days of its launch. Beyond China, the X9 has also gained traction in the Thai market, where it has been the best-selling BEV MPV for three consecutive months.

The X9’s success highlights the growing demand for premium electric MPVs, particularly those equipped with advanced AI features and extended range capabilities. The updated model’s performance enhancements and increased computing power are poised to further strengthen its position in both domestic and international markets.
