Great Wall Motor (GWM) has introduced its premium plug-in hybrid MPV, the Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV, to the Malaysian market. Priced at $68,700 (269,800 MYR), the vehicle builds on its November 2025 debut in Thailand and marks a significant step in GWM’s regional expansion.
Strategic Manufacturing Hub
The Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV is the first luxury plug-in hybrid MPV to be locally assembled in Malaysia. This is not just a product launch; it underscores GWM’s long-term strategy to establish Malaysia as a crucial manufacturing base and export hub for the broader ASEAN region. The move signals confidence in Malaysia’s automotive capabilities and infrastructure.
Key Specifications and Interior Comfort
The G9 Hi4 boasts dimensions of 5,050mm in length with a 3,085mm wheelbase, similar to GWM’s domestic Gaoshan 7 model. The interior prioritizes passenger comfort with features like Nappa leather seats with ventilation and massage in the front row, and “zero-gravity” Nappa seats in the second row with one-touch folding. The cabin is designed for practicality, including 11 USB charging ports and a three-row seating configuration.
Soundproofing is a key element, with cabin noise measured at just 63.4 decibels at 120 km/h, complemented by a high-end 21-speaker, 2,440-watt audio system. GWM has also included a built-in 12.5-liter refrigerator and a 3.3 kW power export function for external use.
Hybrid Power and Performance
The Wey G9 Hi4 PHEV is powered by GWM’s Hi4 intelligent hybrid system, combining a turbocharged engine with dual electric motors for all-wheel drive. This setup delivers 442 hp and 642 Nm of torque, allowing for a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.7 seconds.
The hybrid system provides up to 170 km of all-electric range for daily commutes, with a total combined range exceeding 1,000 km. The vehicle also incorporates an intelligent Torque Vector Control (iTVC) system for optimized handling and stability.
This launch demonstrates GWM’s commitment to new energy vehicles in Malaysia, reinforcing the country’s position as a key player in the regional automotive market.
The G9 Hi4 PHEV represents a significant investment by GWM in Malaysia’s automotive sector and sets a new benchmark for luxury plug-in hybrid MPVs in the region.
