Suzuki Across: The Toyota RAV4 in Disguise

2

The Suzuki Across is the latest iteration of a familiar formula: a rebadged Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid, updated with revised styling and tech enhancements. While it won’t be available in the US, the Across offers European buyers a compelling plug-in hybrid SUV option.

Refreshed Design, Familiar Foundation

Visually, the new Across adopts a clean, purposeful aesthetic with a distinctive grille, rugged fender cladding, and large wheels – echoing the design cues of the current RAV4. Four exterior colors are available: Massive Grey Metallic, Ever Rest Metallic, Super White, and Attitude Black Metallic. This design isn’t merely cosmetic; it suggests a degree of off-road capability.

Premium Interior with Tech Integration

Inside, the cabin features a so-called “island architecture,” grouping controls and displays into functional clusters. A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.9-inch center touchscreen dominate the dashboard, offering customizable layouts for navigation, audio, and climate control.

For the first time, the Across includes a head-up display projecting key information onto the windshield. The vehicle also boasts wireless smartphone charging, five USB-C ports, and heated power seats with lumbar support and memory settings.

Safety and Driver Aids

The Across is equipped with a comprehensive suite of driver-assistance systems, including Pre-Collision System (detecting vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists), adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. A 360-degree camera system with a 3D view enhances visibility. Safety features are calibrated to prevent unintended acceleration at low speeds, including during cornering.

Performance and Efficiency

The Across is powered by Toyota’s latest-generation plug-in hybrid system, combining a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine (141 hp) with two electric motors (201 hp front, 54 hp rear). This setup delivers a combined output of 302 hp and all-wheel drive, enabling a 0–62 mph time of 6.1 seconds. The 22.7-kilowatt-hour battery enhances electric-only range and overall efficiency.

The vehicle offers Normal, Eco, and Sport driving modes, as well as a Trail mode for fixed torque split and enhanced stability on loose surfaces. The Across has a top speed of 112 mph and meets Euro 6e-bis emissions standards.

Practicality and Space

The Across offers 15.7 cubic feet of cargo space, expandable by folding the rear seats. A power liftgate with a foot-gesture operation adds convenience. The vehicle seats five passengers and features a 14.5-gallon fuel tank.

Pricing and Availability

The previous Across generation started around €58,000 in Europe; the updated model is expected to see a slight price increase. Suzuki will not offer this SUV in the American market.

The Suzuki Across is essentially a Toyota RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid under a different badge. While not available in the US, it provides European buyers with a well-equipped and efficient plug-in hybrid SUV option.
