Audi’s highly anticipated electric sports car, the Concept C, is still on track for a 2027 release despite recent rumors questioning its future. CEO Gernot Döllner addressed employees directly, reassuring them that the jointly developed platform with Porsche remains secure. The confirmation comes after speculation arose when reports suggested Porsche might cancel its own electric 718 Boxster and Cayman variants.
Joint Development and Platform Security
The Concept C is being engineered alongside Porsche’s electric sports car project, utilizing a shared EV-only platform. Döllner’s internal communication explicitly stated that the platform delivery from Porsche is “not in question,” and the project is progressing well through collaboration between both teams. This reassures employees and stakeholders that Audi remains committed to the electric sports car segment.
Porsche’s Uncertainty and EV-Only Approach
While Audi stands firm, Porsche’s commitment to the electric 718 is less certain. Reports suggest battery-related development challenges, though officially, the company maintains its plans for an electric version alongside continued production of gasoline-powered models. Unlike Porsche, Audi has ruled out a combustion engine revival for its sports car lineup, betting solely on electric performance. The Concept C will launch as an EV-only model, with a planned targa roof design similar to the original show car.
Strategic Importance for Audi
The Concept C represents more than just another sports car; Audi has positioned it as a “TT 2.0,” signaling a shift towards higher-quality interiors, a bolder design language, and a return to physical controls. Canceling the project now would be a significant setback for the brand, especially after years of playing catch-up to BMW and Mercedes in the luxury market.
Market Realities and Investment Considerations
Despite the strategic importance, the future of electric sports cars remains uncertain. The sports car segment is shrinking, and fully electric models may face dampened demand. However, with substantial investments already made in a bespoke platform, Volkswagen Group likely cannot afford to abandon the project. The decision to go all-in on EVs means Audi has no fallback plan for combustion engines in this category.
The Concept C is a critical step for Audi to reassert its position in the luxury sports car market, but its success hinges on overcoming broader industry challenges and consumer demand for fully electric performance vehicles.
