Subaru Recalls 71,000 Hybrids Due to Fuel Leak and Fire Risk

Subaru is recalling 71,207 hybrid versions of its 2025 Forester and 2026 Crosstrek SUVs due to a dangerous defect in the fuel cap seals. The flaw could lead to gasoline leaks, creating a potential fire hazard under certain conditions.

The Problem: Faulty Fuel Cap Seals

The issue centers around a poorly designed gasket on the fuel cap that fails to maintain a tight seal. When the fuel tank is nearly full and the vehicle is exposed to hot weather, pressure builds up inside the tank. This pressure forces fuel to leak out of the cap, which poses a fire risk. Subaru discovered the defect after an internal investigation sparked by reports from the U.S. market.

What Owners Should Do Now

Subaru advises owners of affected vehicles to take immediate precautions:

  • Park Outdoors: Park the vehicle outside whenever possible until the repair is completed. This reduces the risk of fuel vapors accumulating in enclosed spaces.
  • Half-Tank Rule: Do not fill the fuel tank beyond half capacity until the faulty gasket is replaced. This minimizes pressure buildup and potential leaks.

The Repair Process

All affected owners will receive a notification by mail on or before March 25, 2026. The fix involves replacing the current gasket with an upgraded version that includes an O-ring for improved sealing. Owners will need to bring their vehicles to a Subaru dealership for the free repair. While production of the 2025 Forester Hybrid has ended, Subaru will replace the seals on all remaining new 2026 Crosstrek Hybrids before they are delivered.

The Larger Context

This recall highlights the importance of rigorous quality control in automotive manufacturing. Fuel leaks are among the most dangerous defects a vehicle can have, as they can easily ignite. While Subaru reports no confirmed fires or injuries to date, the potential for harm is significant. This situation also underscores how even modern vehicles can be susceptible to seemingly small component failures that have serious consequences.

The recall affects 51,707 Forester Hybrids and 19,500 Crosstrek Hybrids. Subaru has acknowledged 33 related reports from the U.S. market, but the company is proactively addressing the issue to prevent future incidents. Owners should follow the manufacturer’s instructions to mitigate the risk until the repair can be completed.
