Cupra’s first all-electric model, the Born, is set to receive a substantial refresh for the 2026 model year. The update brings exterior styling aligned with Cupra’s latest design language, an upgraded interior, and key new tech features like one-pedal driving. This overhaul is crucial as the electric family car market becomes increasingly competitive, with rivals like the Volvo EX30 and Kia EV3 gaining traction.
Exterior Design Overhaul
The Born’s visual identity now incorporates the signature three-triangle lighting motif from Cupra’s other vehicles, including the Tavascan and Terramar. The front end features a redesigned “grille” intended to enhance both aesthetics and aerodynamic efficiency, alongside copper accents that reinforce the brand’s DNA.
At the rear, a new bumper, bootlid, and 3D-style taillights complement the front’s updated look. Illuminated door handles and new 19/20-inch wheel designs are also included. A new Timanfaya Grey paint option expands the color palette.
Interior Upgrades and Enhanced Technology
Inside, the Born replaces its 5.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a larger, more immersive 10.25-inch display for improved readability. The central touchscreen remains at 12.9 inches, but now features physical buttons on the steering wheel, addressing previous complaints about the capacitive climate controls. Rear-window switches have also been separated from the front controls to enhance user experience.
Top-spec models gain steering-wheel-mounted paddles for regenerative braking, including a new one-pedal drive mode. Interior materials include upcycled Seaqual Yarn or Dinamica recycled textiles, with copper accents and animated ambient lighting completing the cabin upgrades.
Performance and Range Improvements
The 2026 Born will be available in V1, V2, and VZ trims. The V1 and V2 models offer either a 58kWh or 79kWh battery, paired with 187hp and 228hp rear-mounted motors, respectively. The VZ variant utilizes the 79kWh battery but boosts power to 322hp with 545Nm of torque, achieving a 0-62mph time of 5.6 seconds.
Range is rated at 280 miles for the 58kWh model and “around” 373 miles for the 79kWh version. DC fast charging speeds are also improved, with the 79kWh battery supporting up to 185kW, enabling a 10-80% charge in about 30 minutes.
New Features and Connectivity
Additional equipment upgrades include new rear air vents, USB-C ports, and a “Mobile Device Key” feature allowing smartphone access and sharing. An optional 10-speaker Sennheiser Contrabass stereo and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) technology are also available, along with a bike-rack tow hook.
Competitive Landscape and Pricing
The Cupra Born enters a highly competitive segment, facing rivals like the Volvo EX30, Kia EV3, Skoda Elroq, Renault Megane E-Tech, Peugeot E-308, and MG4. The VW ID.3, Cupra’s sister car, is also undergoing redesigns. Pricing is expected to remain competitive, with current models starting at £34,190 (with applicable grants), and VZ variants reaching nearly £45,000. Discounts on outgoing pre-facelift models are currently available.
The 2026 Cupra Born refresh is designed to maintain its relevance in a rapidly evolving market, offering a compelling blend of updated design, enhanced technology, and competitive performance.
