Rivian is set to unveil the R2 crossover tomorrow, but key specifications have already surfaced online. The vehicle will launch in Performance trim with a starting price of $57,990 (before destination fees), positioning it as a more accessible entry into the electric SUV market.
Performance and Range
The R2 Performance boasts a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, powered by an 87.9 kWh battery pack. This setup delivers a range of up to 330 miles and supports fast charging, reaching 80% capacity in approximately 29 minutes. The model also features semi-active suspension for improved ride quality and comes standard with 21-inch alloy wheels.
Trim Options and Price Points
Rivian plans to expand the R2 lineup with additional trims:
- R2 Premium: Available later this year for $53,990, this version offers a slightly less powerful powertrain with 450 horsepower but retains the 87.9 kWh battery. It features smaller 20-inch wheels and fewer drive modes compared to the Performance trim.
- R2 Standard (2027): A more affordable option priced at $45,000, the Standard trim will initially launch with a smaller battery providing around 265 miles of range. A longer-range version with the 87.9 kWh battery will offer up to 345 miles of range.
Interior and Exterior Features
The R2 emphasizes both style and practicality. The interior includes birch wood trim, heated front and rear seats, and a nine-speaker audio system. Exterior highlights include matrix LED headlights and an integrated flashlight in the front doors. The vehicle’s dimensions are 185.9 inches in length, 78.1 inches in width, and 66.9 inches in height, with up to 9.6 inches of ground clearance.
Cargo Capacity and Charging
The R2 provides a generous cargo capacity of up to 79.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, reducing to 28.7 cubic feet with the seats up. It also features a North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for compatibility with Tesla’s Supercharger network.
The R2 represents Rivian’s push to broaden its customer base by offering a more attainable electric vehicle. The tiered trim structure ensures that buyers can choose a configuration that balances performance, range, and budget.
