Mercedes-Benz has revealed the VLE, an all-electric successor to the V-Class minivan, marking a significant shift toward premium electric mobility. The VLE, dubbed a “Grand Limousine” by the manufacturer, will initially launch in Europe, the USA, and China – a first for Mercedes-Benz in the American luxury minivan segment. While an Australian release date remains undefined, the new model signals a clear move to electrify the high-end people mover category.
Bold Design and Electric Power
The VLE breaks from its predecessor with a bolder aesthetic, featuring a closed-off grille (available with illuminated accents), blackened side panels, and a distinctive rear light bar integrated with the spoiler. This design language distinguishes it from competitors like the Zeekr 009, especially in the Chinese market where luxury MPVs are highly competitive.
Two electric drivetrains will be available at launch: the VLE300 Electric (203kW, front-wheel drive) and the VLE400 4Matic Electric (over 300kW, all-wheel drive). The VLE400 achieves 0–100 km/h in a claimed 6.5 seconds. Both models utilize an 115kWh NMC battery, offering up to 700km of range (WLTP standard), with a cheaper 80kWh LFP battery option planned for 2027. The VLE’s 800V architecture enables rapid DC fast-charging at up to 300kW.
Spacious Interior and Innovative Features
The VLE is notably larger than the top-selling Kia Carnival, measuring 5309mm long in standard wheelbase configuration, and up to 5484mm for the extended version. Despite its size, it boasts a drag coefficient of just 0.25Cd – matching the EQE SUV. The interior offers flexible seating for up to eight passengers, with manually adjustable seats that roll out on wheels for easy reconfiguration. Electric seats can also be moved remotely via the touchscreen or smartphone app.
Standard features include electric sliding doors, 19-inch wheels, heated seats, and a dual 10.25-inch instrument display with a 14.0-inch infotainment touchscreen. Extensive options include 20- or 22-inch wheels, air suspension (lowering the ride height by up to 40mm), a retractable 31.3-inch 8K rear screen with webcam, and a full-length panoramic glass roof.
Future Combustion and Commercial Variants
Mercedes-Benz plans to introduce combustion engine versions of the VLE alongside commercial van variants in the future. Towing capacity is rated at 2500kg, and optional rear-wheel steering reduces the turning circle to 10.9m. The VLE represents a strategic effort to redefine luxury in the people mover segment, blending electric power, spaciousness, and innovative features.
The VLE’s launch in key markets signals a broader trend: automakers are now aggressively electrifying their high-end MPV offerings to cater to growing consumer demand for sustainable luxury mobility.
