Chery is preparing to offer a lower-priced version of its Tiggo 9 large SUV in Australia, confirmed by recent government certification documents. The move introduces a front-wheel drive variant alongside the existing plug-in hybrid all-wheel drive model, potentially making the Tiggo 9 more competitive in the market.
New Variant Details
The upcoming front-wheel drive Tiggo 9 retains the same 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine (105kW) but simplifies its electric powertrain. Unlike the AWD version, which uses three electric motors for a total system output of 315kW, the new variant will have only two, integrated into the transmission unit, producing 75kW and 90kW respectively.
The exact total power output of the FWD model is not yet specified in official documentation. This suggests that Chery may be aiming for a more fuel-efficient, lower-cost alternative rather than direct performance parity with the AWD Tiggo 9.
Market Positioning and Pricing
Currently, the Tiggo 9 is available only as a high-spec “Super Hybrid Ultimate AWD,” priced at $59,990 before on-road costs. The addition of a front-wheel drive option would likely create a significant price gap, allowing Chery to reach buyers who may find the current model too expensive.
The Tiggo 8, a closely related model, offers plug-in hybrid variants between $45,990 and $49,990 drive-away. A front-wheel drive Tiggo 9 could slot into this range, boosting sales volume and challenging rivals like the Kia Sorento PHEV.
Sales Performance and Context
The Tiggo 8 is currently outselling the Tiggo 9 by a wide margin (697 vs. 262 units in the first two months of 2024). This indicates a strong demand for Chery’s large SUV offerings, but also suggests that price sensitivity is a key factor for many buyers.
The Tiggo 9 already outperforms other models from Chery’s affiliated brand, Omoda Jaecoo, though its overall sales remain behind the more established Tiggo 8. The introduction of a cheaper FWD variant could reverse this trend by expanding the Tiggo 9’s appeal to a broader audience.
The expansion of the Tiggo 9 lineup highlights Chery’s strategy to cater to diverse consumer preferences while gaining market share in Australia. By offering a more affordable option, Chery aims to increase its competitiveness against established brands.
