BMW has officially teased the upcoming all-electric i3 Touring, confirming a long-anticipated estate version of its newest 3 Series. The reveal came during the launch event for the i3 sedan, where BMW Group CEO Oliver Zipse showcased a shadowy silhouette of the Touring model.
Expanding the i3 Lineup
Zipse emphasized the importance of the Touring body style for BMW, stating, “The 3 Series has been much more than just a sedan… the Touring has always been a favorite with business customers and families.” This move aligns with broader industry trends: automakers now recognize that electric vehicles (EVs) must cater to diverse consumer needs, including those seeking the practicality of an estate.
Performance and Range Expectations
The i3 Touring is expected to mirror the powertrain options of the i3 sedan. Currently, the high-performance 50 xDrive variant boasts 462 horsepower and 645 Nm of torque. BMW plans to introduce single-motor versions in the future.
The sedan achieves an impressive 559-mile range with its large 112kWh battery—the longest range available in the UK market. The Touring’s added weight may slightly reduce this figure, but it will likely remain competitive within its class. Charging capabilities will be similar, supporting up to 400kW for approximately 248 miles of range in just 10 minutes.
Design Details and Release Timeline
