Mercedes-Benz GLS Receives Major Interior and Tech Upgrade

Mercedes-Benz has significantly updated its flagship GLS SUV, introducing a redesigned interior mirroring the latest S-Class luxury sedan, alongside engine enhancements. This is the second major revision for the current generation GLS, which debuted in 2019. The update arrives concurrently with similar changes to the GLE SUV and GLE Coupé models.

Redesigned Interior Focuses on Rear Passengers

The most dramatic changes are inside, particularly in the rear cabin. The GLS now features dual 11.2-inch touchscreens for rear passengers, enabling entertainment and video conferencing. This move highlights a growing trend in luxury vehicles to prioritize rear-seat comfort and functionality, catering to high-net-worth individuals and chauffeur-driven clientele. New, smartphone-inspired controllers allow passengers to adjust seats, infotainment, ambient lighting, and even window blinds.

Up front, the GLS gains Mercedes’ wide Superscreen display and an 18-inch augmented-reality head-up display as standard equipment. A new steering wheel with rocker controls further modernizes the cockpit. Seven-seat models now feature electronically adjustable second-row seating to maximize third-row legroom.

Exterior Updates and Performance

The exterior receives subtle updates, including a new front bumper, grille, and headlights. AMG Line models feature an illuminated grille for added visual flair. A new light bar now incorporates the Mercedes logo at the rear, while exclusive 23-inch wheels are available.

The GLS retains its engine options, starting with a 308bhp straight-six diesel (350d) and topping out with a 530bhp 4.0-liter V8 turbo petrol (580). The latter delivers 0-62mph acceleration in just 4.7 seconds.

The GLS refresh underscores Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to maintaining its position as a leader in luxury SUV technology and comfort. The focus on rear passenger amenities suggests a deliberate effort to appeal to a more affluent and demanding segment of the market.
