Ford Recalls Over 2,600 Vehicles Due to Fire Risk in ARB Lighting Systems

14

Ford Australia has issued a recall for 2,696 vehicles – including the Ranger ute, Everest SUV, and F-150 pickup – due to a defect in the wiring harnesses of certain ARB Solis driving lights. The issue poses a potential fire hazard, which could occur even while the vehicle is parked.

The Problem: Moisture and Corrosion

According to the recall notice, a manufacturing defect allows moisture to enter the wiring harness, leading to corrosion. This corrosion can generate excessive heat, increasing the risk of a fire. Ford advises owners of affected vehicles to park them in open areas away from flammable materials until the issue is resolved. The recall affects vehicles fitted with the specific ARB Solis lights in question.

ARB Also Issues Recall

ARB, the manufacturer of the lighting systems, has also issued its own recall notice for the wiring loom (SJBAHARNFRD) used with its Intensity Solis driving lights. ARB states the connector may not fully engage, allowing water ingress. This independent recall underscores the severity of the issue: water in the wiring can lead to fire and potential injury or property damage.

Interim Repair: Deactivating the Lights

While parts are being sourced, Ford is instructing customers on how to deactivate the Solis lights as a temporary measure. This allows owners to continue using their vehicles safely while awaiting a permanent repair. The company has provided instructions for this deactivation.

What Owners Should Do

Affected vehicle owners are urged to contact their local Ford dealership for repair. The company’s Customer Relationship Centre (133 673) is also available for inquiries. The Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) of impacted vehicles are linked in the original recall notice.

This recall highlights the importance of component quality control in vehicle manufacturing. While rare, electrical fires are among the most dangerous automotive defects, underscoring why manufacturers and suppliers must prioritize safety in their designs.
