This thickness isn’t static. It changes with temperature. Cold oil is thick. Hot oil is thin. This tendency is called the viscosity index. Most engines operate between freezing mornings and operating temperatures over 200 degrees Fahrenheit. The oil needs to handle both extremes.

You don’t need to buy extra chemicals for basic protection. The oil you pour in the dipstick tube already contains them. Rust inhibitors stop corrosion. Detergents and dispersants keep sludge from building up. They break down contaminants and suspend them so the filter can catch them. Zinc is also added to many oils. It protects camshafts and lifters from wear.

The Truth About Aftermarket Engine Oil Additives

Walk into an auto parts store. You will see bottles promising better performance. They claim to clean engines further. They promise reduced friction. They sound tempting. But are they necessary?

The short answer is no. For most drivers, these aftermarket additives are redundant. They likely won’t make a noticeable difference. The additives already in the oil are doing the heavy lifting. In many cases, they have more of a placebo effect on the driver than any genuine mechanical effect on the engine.

There are exceptions. If you buy cheap oil from a nonstandard manufacturer, you might get a lower-quality base. Or if your owner’s manual specifies special additive needs for high-mileage engines or specific racing applications. But for the average car? You are just adding clutter.
