The heat is here early. It’s going to get hotter. You want your car cool, so you hit the AC button. Simple enough.
But that simple click changes everything.
For combustion engine cars, you are literally burning fuel to push cold air. The Ademe (French Environment and Energy Management Agency) says this can spike your city consumption by up to 2 liters per 100 kilometers. That is significant. It is not a rounding error.
Electric vehicles suffer differently. You lose range. Volkswagen estimates a 10 to 15 percent drop in autonomy if you are cruising at 130 km/h with the AC blasting.
You can mitigate this. You don’t have to suffer through the cabin sauna.
Set the Right Temperature
Most people crank the dial down as low as it goes. This is a mistake. It forces the compressor to work overtime.
Set the temperature 5 to 7 degrees Celsius below the outside air. That is enough to cool you down without overworking the system. It also prevents that shock when you step out into the 35-degree heat. You stay comfortable. You save energy.
Use Recirculation Smartly
Find the button with the U-turn arrow inside the car icon. That is recirculation.
It keeps the air inside the cabin loop. The AC cools the same air over and over instead of pulling in scorching fresh air from outside. It is far more efficient.
But do not abuse it. If you keep it on for hours, the air quality degrades. Carbon dioxide builds up. You get drowsy. Use it for the initial cooldown, then switch back to fresh air mode to keep the oxygen flowing.
The Bernoulli Technique for Pre-Cooling
Opening the windows while driving wastes energy due to drag. But sitting in a pre-heated car is worse.
There is a method based on fluid dynamics that works better than just cracking a window. It gained traction online recently for good reason.
Roll down one window on the driver’s side. Open the front passenger door fully, then slam it shut. Do this two or three times.
Why does this work? It creates a pressure differential. You physically force the superheated air out of the cabin and replace it with cooler ambient air. The heat leaves. The temperature drops. When you finally start the AC, it has less work to do.
Maintenance Matters
People forget the basics.
Your cabin air filter traps dust, pollen, and debris. If it is clogged, airflow chokes. The AC has to work harder to push air through the blockage.
Clean the filter occasionally. Replace it every year or every 15,000 kilometers. If you drive mostly in the city with stop-and-go traffic, do it more often.
Check the refrigerant gas. It should be recharged and purified every two years. Low gas means poor cooling and higher strain on the compressor.
Park Smart
Prevention is cheaper than cure.
Park in the shade. Always. Use a reflective sunshade on the windshield. It keeps the interior from reaching oven temperatures in the first place.
A cooler car means less energy spent on cooling.
