Of all the Chinese brands that have crashed onto the UK scene, Jaecoo hits hardest. They arrived with sister brand Omoda back in January 2024 (not 2025). The Jaecoo 7 already took the top spot for UK sales in March. A big win for Chery.
Prices helped. Styling did too. But it’s the mix that sells. Petrol, hybrid, electric. Whatever you want, they have it.
Now they want the whole spectrum.
Two new cars are coming in 2027 to cap and floor the range. The big one, the Jaecoo 9, is a cheap Land Rover Discovery killer. Built for Chery’s global army.
The small one. That’s different. That’s for us.
Chery Chairman Yin Tongyue said it plainly
In China, we love extremes. Big or small. Europe wants middle ground.
So they built B-segment cars specifically for Europe. For Jaecoo. Omoda. Even the new Lepas badge.
Looks like a baby Rover?
The Jaecoo 3 lands first. A compact crossover. Roughly 4.2 meters long.
Direct enemy? Ford Puma. Renault 4. Maybe even the new Fiat Panda if pricing aligns.
It keeps the boxy style. The “mini Land Rover” look. That sells. Ironically, Chery is now in a joint venture with Land Rover. Engineering new Freelanders together. Do you think some British design DNA slipped into Chery’s studio? Maybe. Who knows.
Interior details are sparse. But expect the Jaecoo 5 tech. The 14.3-inch waterfall屏幕? Yes. It fits here. Rear seat room is decent. Five seats. Flexible boot. Nothing radical.
Under the hood
It’s front-wheel drive.
For the electric version? Flat battery. 40-45 kWh range. Aims for 220 miles minimum. Anything less gets crushed by rivals.
Hybrid variants use Chery’s SHS system. A 1.5-liter four-cylinder plus an electric motor. Roughly 55 mpg. Solid.
Pure petrol? Probably not. Chery admits their engines lag European tech in this size. Plug-in hybrids are also unlikely. Though B-segment PHEVs are popping up everywhere now.
The price game
Price is the war.
If Jaecoo wants to punch as hard as the Jaecoo 5, they need to start low. £16,000 to £17,000 is the target.
Look at the competition. Fiat Grande Panda starts at £18,003. Citroen C3 is just over £19,0 class.
The market is about to get bloody.
New European tech is incoming. Cupra Raval. Skoda Epiq. VW ID. Cross. All promise better tech. Better design. Stellantis is launching the STLA-Small platform with next-gen Peugeots and Vauxhalls.
Ford and Renault are tying up for the future too. More Fiestas. More Pumas.
Will Jaecoo keep the EV premium high?
On the Jaecoo 5, electric adds £3,000 over petrol. On the smaller model 3? The gap might shrink. Rivals like Citroen only charge £1,00 more for BEVs over petrol/mild-hybrid bases.
Add UK Government Electric Car Grants into the mix. Up to £3,750 off for qualifying cars. Suddenly the price equation gets messy.
Jaecoo moved fast on mid-sizers. The small segment? That’s harder. The value prop needs to be undeniable. If they miss on price… the Renault and Ford buyers won’t notice them.
