Mercedes-Benz is getting ready to introduce the next generation of its iconic CLA coupe, and yes, it will be available as a pure electric vehicle. The manufacturer has released a video showing a prototype wrapped in heavy camouflage to keep the full design under wraps until the official reveal. This isn’t just a cosmetic update. The electric CLA inherits technology developed for the record-breaking EQXX concept, which managed to travel 1,000 kilometers on a single charge.
The new model will feature a two-speed transmission. This setup aims to balance high-performance acceleration with overall efficiency. The Electric CLA and Hybrid Variants
Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz AG, and Sarah Harman gave a first glimpse of the CLA.
“With the CLA, we enter a new era at Mercedes-Benz,” Källenius stated. “We will significantly improve every aspect of what our customers can expect from a Mercedes in this segment. The modular platform offers maximum flexibility: we can offer the CLA both in a state-of-the-art rear-wheel-drive electric version and in a hybrid version with electrified combustion. And our operating system, MB.OS, will make it the smartest car we have ever built.”
Technical details remain scarce, but the electric CLA is expected to use an 800-volt battery architecture. Charging capabilities will hit 250 kW, enabling an estimated range exceeding 750 kilometers. A quick 15-minute charge should add 400 kilometers of range. Design-wise, the electric CLA will likely mirror the silhouette of the Concept CLA unveiled last year. Since the car is masked, Mercedes only showed the headlight unit, which integrates the brand’s three-pointed star.
Mercedes will also offer a hybrid version. This variant will use 48V technology and an electrified transmission for improved efficiency. More details are expected when the vehicle launches in 2025.
